Frequent unplugging and reconnection may damage the cable over time.

I missed the first part of this message so don't know exactly what you
are attempting to achieve. But, if you are trying to isolate your
computer from the net without turning off the modem and hence your
home phone, have a look at your firewall. Some have an option to stop
all traffic which allows the computer to be isolated without turning
off the modem. I currently use Vipre which has this option and use it
frequently.
