Perhaps, the unavailability of this feature is the main problem in
using Gwyddion as the "default" processing tool for AFM images.
In particular, the missing tool is the possibility to do a polynomial
leveling of an image excluding an user defined area of it. The idea is
to define a "no-interest" complex area using masks (or marking grains
by threshold) and to level only the remaining parts. The masked parts
have not to contribute in the leveling process. Something like that is
routinely performed (and very efficiently!) by the korean software
XEI, supplied with PSIA AFMs, unfortunately only on their proprietary
image format.
My question is, Gwyddion is already able to do this operation
excluding a simple rectangular area so, is impossible to extend this
function to a patchy area?

Thank you a lot for the discussion and the continuous improvements in
this fantastic piece of software!

Denis
