Rolf, I will submit a bug report to macports.
Yeti, I have tried what you suggested and it did not seem to help:

bash-3.2$ export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH
bash-3.2$ cd /opt/local/bin
bash-3.2$ export DISPLAY=:0
bash-3.2$ ./gwyddion --no-splash
Assertion failed: (status > CAIRO_STATUS_SUCCESS && status <= CAIRO_STATUS_LAST_STATUS), function _cairo_error, file cairo.c, line 87.
Abort trap
bash-3.2$

Any further suggestions?

I've got a backtrace in the other report and it fails when it tries to
display the splash screen -- essentially it fails as soon as it tries to
display anything. The splash is a bit special, but apparently the
failure is not caused by anything splash-screen specific as you get an
identical failure in both cases (though it still could be two different
bugs).

Could you please check whether gtk-demo (should be normally installed as
a part of Gtk+) or other Gtk+ applications work? If they exhibit the
same problem then the cause is not in Gwyddion code and it has to be
fixed in Cairo/Gtk+.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] suggests that using DISPLAY causes trouble
(see #17204, https://trac.macports.org/ticket/17204). But I would also
think, that this is not the problem of the gwyddion port but the problem
in cairo/gtk+ port. Since I have used the external HD withmy leopard
installation last week to install debian on my "fallback" Notebook I can't
check this out by myself now.

Perhaps "swebster" has some Ideas (he has checked out the gtkglext
error on leopard), so I put him/her in CC.
