I figured out both questions. There's a bug, at least in the mac version, where some default selections are not treated properly.
Like, when using masked data, if I simply see that it's already by default set to 'use only data under mask', and don't click on anything, it fails. If I manually set that radio button, it works. And when trying to apply a saved mask, it won't apply unless I manually select that the mask should be set or added, rather than leaving it as the default 'set'. Does anyone else have this?
