thank you for you answer.
I read the post you suggested and I agree that leveling is a critical point
in step height determination. Reasonably, using a profile is simpler and
clearer but in my case I need much more statistics than that I can obtaining
by widening a bit the profile. My step is not straight so I can not use a
wide profile without introducing an unwanted noise near the step; at the
same time I'm interested in obtaining a value over the whole image, because
the deviations around the mean are important (I do not have a very sharp
step). That's why I was thinking on using the height profile.
