Freedesktop.org makes it clear that they are focused completely on Linux/UNIX
platforms: not surprising that Microsoft has ignored them. I agree that it
would take a very experienced Windows programmer to make such a shell extension
efficiently. Not worth the effort at this point.

So...
No more questions. Gwyddion is a superb program that you and your team should
be proud of. It will be very valuable to our project. Thanks for your prompt
and well-considered answers. I always hesitate to post questions to the
open-source community for fear of getting flamed as a newbie, but you have been
most gracious and helpful. Thanks.

Well, MS Windows does not seem to follow the Freedesktop thumbnail management
standard... So gwyddion-thumbnailer can create the thumbnail images. But you
will see them only in Gwyddion and perhaps some other Unix programs – or not,
as Unix programs do not really agree among themselves how to handle this kind
of system integration in MS Windows.

The missing piece is a Windows shell extension (or how it is called now)

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb774614%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

which can provide thumbnails to the Windows shell. I do not have the expertise
to write such extension. In fact, I do not even have the means of testing it
properly. I suppose a number of people would appreciate such extension though.

The generate-a-thumbnail-for-this-SPM-file piece is already implemented in
gwyddion-thumbnailer. For me, this is the easy part. The difficult part is
the proper installation, registration and interfacing to MS Windows so that it
actually works.

Yeti
