It’s been a very long time since I last posted here, but as someone with a severe lung disease, and a daughter who is a consultant physician in an Acute Medical Unit, there are a number of points which may be helpful:
1. The corona virus is transmitted in droplets; masks are intended to stop those droplets. Coffee filters are specifically designed to allow liquids to pass through them; the reverse of what is needed for a useful mask. 2. The HEPA filters on my oxygen condenser and the compressor for my nebuliser are indistinguishable from the HEPA bags for my vacuum cleaner; all of them are built to withstand far greater pressures than a human being can exert by breathing. It would be unwise to have any of them against your skin, but as a filter inserted into two layers of densely woven material they provide a much higher barrier to corona virus than anything short of the sort of medical respirators worn by healthcare professionals, which should be reserved for healthcare professionals like my daughter:) 3. The best way I have found for getting a good seal at the top of the mask over the nose is tit tape; most costumers will have come across it, but if not: it’s a double sided adhesive tape specifically intended to attach clothing to human skin, and it can easily be bought online. It is removed and binned along with the filter before washing the mask for re-use. 4. I am using a densely woven linen because of its superior ability to absorb moisture and its ability to withstand being washed at very high temperatures; the downside is having to iron it dry but we are all used to ironing. I hope this is of some use; best wishes to you all.
