Most late period sleeves tied or buttoned into the armhole. That puffy
(shirred) sleeve is attached to the gown, the undersleeve ties under it at
the armhole. It is a practical consideration also. A woman could have a
"new" gown with the addition of a pair of sleeves!

BTW-- I've done this gown (gown: black wool and sleeves:maroon wool) The
sleeves have mega pieces...

I knew that Laura's gown was brown and black (did you know that she was
a Famous Poet?) -- but how can you tell that the maroon lower sleeves
on Lucrezia's gown tie into the armhole?
