Actually one thing that is interesting is the amount of consumer
pressure these days compared to 25 or 30 years ago.  My niece is starting
college this year and had to coordinate with her new roommate on the colors
and styles of sheets, towels, curtains, etc. For myself and my brothers, we were allowed to root through the linen closet
for things to take to school.  :-)

I can't believe parents have forgone the Great Upgrade opportunity. For my parents' generation, the kids moving out was the time to discard all the functional, but used-and-battered, or received-as-a-gift-and-disliked, household linens, rugs, furniture, cookware, and small appliances; so they could guiltlessly buy themselves the things THEY really wanted!
