Try turning the needle 90, 180 then 270 degrees, often a needle will be in 
wrong way around and will often not pick up due to this (and were all the 
needles in the drawer the right ones?).

Is the correct size bobbin in place?

Is the bobbin case in good repair?

Is the tension all okay?

You may find that the mechanism in the underside of the head (the machine is 
called the head in the table, there are horizontal rods running along the 
length of the underside that turn the bobbin case. Are they working?

If they are working, they may not be aligned correctly. Loosen the bobbin case 
on these rods (a few screws just beside it)and shift it around a fraction of an 
inch. Keep trying this until things work (you cannot do harm by this).

These are a few simple things to try out. Of course, if you cannot get it 
working, old machines make handy anchors!
