I kick myself every time I forget and wash silk taffeta by machine - it 
looses quite a bit of the crispness (though not all) and a fair amount of 
the sheen. It doesn't completely change the character of the fabric, but 
it's just not as pretty as before I washed it (imo). I haven't noticed any 
shrinkage, however.
