When my 25-year-old was still a junior in high school she came home from a thrift store with a pair of poly double-knit trousers, in the mandatory plaid, and tried to convince me they were cool. I offered to tell her what we thought of those when they were new, which ended the conversation. I let her wear them, on the theory that nobody would think I put her up to it.
