Is the sarafan a relative of the apron dress?? I don't think so. It has sides, and, in its recent configurations, it has straps sewn right on. They're wide apart in front and close together in back. And the garment doesn't seem to go back farther than the 1600s (I tried researching one for SCA wear, and they're not quite early enough.)
