You're more than welcome to make your strings look like "key1=val", "key2=val2" I did the simplest thing that could possibly work. I don't see any reason to add additional complexity for things like this.
I must admit, I am partly motivated by the fact that people seem to be developing additional storage engines inside H2 and not contributing them back.
