Many of the branches we have[1] have either been merged back into
trunk and are no longer being developed (monolith, jqueryui15) or were

branches are active.

Is it a bad idea to create a branches/retired directory and move such
branches when appropriate ?

Why not just delete the old branches?

Branches are intended to be temporary working areas alongside trunk, once the branch has been merged back into trunk it should be nuked.
