Have you seen a significant amount of spam lately? I saw that rick_c dumped a couple of pages and blocked a few accounts a week or two ago, but I have yet to see this spam wave people are talking about. Am I missing it?
I hate spam as much as the next guy, but having spent a week trying to upgrade the damned wiki I'm not inclined to create more work and trouble for anyone right now unless there's a good reason. The very limited permissions set MediaWiki provides also doesn't make it particularly easy to hand out access to only do a handful of things anyway, so that's something else to consider.
