I have the same problem with Mandrake 9.1.
The artsd takes up more than 99% of CPU (sometimes). When it
does, it is impossibe to kill, even with kill -9. The only
thing I could to get over it was to (sigh) reboot.

I wonder why this happens, how to avoid it -- now you also
know that kill -9 doesnt work (at least not on my system).
