The reason that behavior's there is that some browsers 
(*cough*KHTML*cough*) aren't able to understand some self-closed tags, 
most notably "<div />". However, I think you're right that the default 
behavior should be to self-close, "open :div, ''" could then create 
"<div></div>". Implemented and committed, available in trunk.
