StaticMatic and Compass are merely libraries that build on Haml and/or Sass.
Saying that Haml "works out the box with them" is not really correct. Ruby
doesn't "work out the box with Rails".

Actually it doesn't. You have to hook up your own code to do initial
rendering and refreshing when source files update.
