Very likely.

Without seeing the kit in question, one can only guess - but my guess is
that the memory timings are taken from the new DIMMs, and those are faster
than the old ones. Running memory above its rated speed is likely to end
in tears...

You could manually set the memory timings to accomodate both sets of
memory - but your machine will probably be a lot perkier if you just
discard the slower sticks.
