We have an old
canon powershot A200, a newer
canon powershot A540 and a more new
canon powershot A720 IS

all work in (PTP mode) in basic transfer mode with digikam, in fact
with the last two purchases I was careful to take a laptop and live
cd in to the shop (Jessops as it happens) and tested them before
purchase. This was useful to me and also meant that the assistant was
appraised that money was associated with functionality......

Interestingly the A540 was not at the time the most recent model when
purchased, but the later model could not be made to transfer while we
were asking. Probably finger trouble but we refused to buy something
which was apparently incompatible. :-) The A540 is still doing well.

In practice we find that the memory cards are used in external card
readers to copy stuff off, and the ptp transfer from the camera proper
is rarely used.

I also donated the live cd each time to the assistant before leaving
the shop, since it had been used to help make a sale, and hopefully
had left an impression.

Our choice of canon was after being told their lenses are thought to
be good (?) and the powershot series because they all are able to use
standard rechargeable AA size batteries which we can use cheaply and
carry spares etc when in our motorhome journeys, avoiding a mains
charger which some cameras need..
