I don't have an HD TV, so the point is difficult for me to answer satisfactorily. However, I did try playing some HD (1080p) content on it recently, and it seemed to cope with that plus the down-scaling to SD very well. That was playing over NFS, on a 100Mbit/s cabled ethernet connection, using the composite video output to the TV.
