DVD Rewriters start from about £14. This might still be your best option.....

True but optical drives from the IDE era seem to be better readers or writers
when i was researching SATA drives on the cdfreaks web site.

I think optical drives have very small margins for the manufacturer so they tend
to be as cheap as possible nowadays. Once the race to the bottom has finished
its difficulty to find decent quality.
When did Plextor stop building quality drives and selling them for £200 when everyone
else sold drives for £50?

2002? or something around that time?
