I also strongly suggest taking a look at the Windows code for the VistA GUI frontend if it's available. That will give you some clues about developing any kind of client.
Didn't know VA was working with a Java for CPRS. Of course, I have some code handy that would be a benefit to that project. The Java environment is our environment of choice.
