DNS/BIND would provide a central location for the other machines to do lookups. If there is only a few machines then you do not need it but, when the number of machine goes past the " I can easily walk to each machine and update the host files on all of them" then DNS offers a way to have all the machines point to one server and all you have to update is the central servers DNS files and push them to all the other machines.
