I don't think you're wrong. M2Web is a kind of M based application server. JBoss and Tomcat are open source options for Java based application servers (and both come installed on OS X out of the box, BTW). I don't know that much about M2Web, but from everything I've heard on this list, it's designed to solve basically the same problem, just using different technology.
