What do you mean by a "bare metal" install?

Re-inventing the wheel, some may say needlessly.
Just so you understand that *I* understand about all the effort and attention that's already been put in by everyone ( YOURSELF INCLUDED, THANK YOU!!! ) to simplify the install process as much as possible.
One of the things I ran into while running through the docs was a lack of understanding how the individual componants worked, and the relationship between them, how they're installed, what the system config issues were, etc.
I can't support or develop for something like this until I understand how it's put together and the best way to learn, is to do.
So I started a fresh install of EVERYTHGIN on a development box.
