I remember helping my mother install DSL years ago. It didn't work. I
spent some time on the phone, getting bumped up the support chain.
Finally, I got impatient and ran traceroute (actually tracert under
Windows), and gave the IP address of the failed router to the engineer
I was speaking to. I was thanked profusely, and they told me that they
had been swamped with calls from people having trouble with their DSL.
