The same configuration successfully HL7 pings two Cache implementations of
VistA. Then why doesn't it work with GT.M?

The client/sending system IP/port should be set to the remote/receiving
system. The receiving system would be running a listener process on that
node and port to accept connect requests from the client system(s). A
single threaded server can accept one connection at a time (usually
applied to a simple two-system interface). You could set up the client
and server links on the same physical device if you wanted but it isn't
typical.

The concept of HL7 ping was for one Vista client system to verify that a
remote Vista listener was up and configured properly on the node and
port defined on the client system. When the high level ping fails, the
client makes a call to DNS to see if the Vista listener has been moved
to another node. If DNS returns a list of nodes, each node is pinged in
sequence. If there is a successful connection on an alternate node, the
client's local database is updated with the new information. The key is
to have DNS contain all possible nodes that a listener could run on.
That way the listener can be moved to a different server when the
original one is taken out of service.

Is the HL7 setup to a logical dotted notation to map into the local
address 192.168.1.31 ? It would seem that there should be two distinct
IP addresses and sending ports in a typical configuration. Or is this
the concept of HL7 ping in "client/server" terms, i.e. that the client
and server share the same IP address.

Thanks for any clarification.
