Mike, have a look at the OSIRIX project...it is one of the most 
successful open source imaging projects I am aware of, there are now 
8,000 users according to their website. It's Mac based (works with the 
new Mac architecture) and apparently someone,  somewhere in the VA has 
tried it out. The list server is here:
