What is this?  I don't know what it is all about but there seems to be SSH 
mixed in with gtm which is what made me suspicious there was a tunnel

No, I have not created tunnel for the connection. But your
observations and advice are, as usual, very, very helpful. Thank you.

I suspect that it is time to try to setup the xinetd on Debian/Sarge.
I don't recall but I am pretty sure it is not part of their default
installation.
