Hmm, looks like the Maximus VII Hero can use the 950, BUT.....there are limited PCIe lanes on a Z97 board, so I wouldn't get the full performance. Otherwise, only a UEFI update is required. The M.2 slot is only PCIe x2.

No, they're not all equal. M.2 has multiple types. M.2 SATA is limited by
the SATA interface, where M.2 PCIe is limited by the PCIe bus.

If you're looking for an addon card,

this one is the one I was going to get prior to upgrading my PC to native
M.2 PCIe. It's got 2x M.2 SATA ports and 1x M.2 PCIe x4 port. The stats
are pretty telling for their information.

Are all M.2 interfaces created equal? The Maximus VII Hero lists "M.2
Socket 3 with M key, type 2260/2280 storage devices support (supports PCI-E
interface only)"

I have not actually used them, but my understanding is the M.2 PCIe x4
adaptors give you full speed of the M.2 cards. The biggest complaint
people have with them is they seem to increase your boot time as they
detect (Similar to a raid card detecting drives).

I've been drooling over it, but my mobo (Z77) doesn't support it.
Any idea how good/bad the options are for add-in cards?
