I am having a problem with an old amd k6/400 based computer and before I
relegate it to the scrap heap, I wanted to check if anyone has an idea of
the problem or where to look for the problem.

In the past, I have loaded Windows ME on this system and used it without
problem. I tried to install WinXP Home, and always had the same problem. The
initial install would freeze at about 77% complete. If I re-boot and do a
repair install, it works but when it finally tries to boot to WinXP, I am
presented with a login screen requiring a password. During the install (the
second time around), I am never prompted for network or password
information. Of course, I have no idea what the password is, so I cannot
complete the installation.

I tried to install with WinXP Pro (full), with the same results. It freezes
at about 77%.

I tried Windows ME again, and it installs fine. I tried to use the WinXP
Home (upgrade) and it does not recognize that any "eligible" previous
Windows installation exists.

I tried Knoppix Live, and it freezes during the boot sequence after scanning
the hardware.

I tried a boot CD with partition magic, and it works. I can run pm,
manipulate the disk, etc. without issue.

So, before I give up on this computer, any ideas or suggestions?

TIA,

Jim Maki
