OK, so you're thinking about using MCE as the "HOST" OS (the OS in which the VPC application runs) and XP Pro as a "GUEST" (the OS installed on a VHD as example). This is fine. You can make VHDs for whatever you want, including a VHD for MCE2005 (though it will be not very functional, as TV Tuners and other items do not work in VirtualPC mode).
Because the significant differences, you can't really use a VHD as something to clone to/from your main boot drive (HOST) you can, however, keep clones of the same VHDs for use on one PC in multiple installs. So I install WinXP - bare, with the various updates to the primary drive. Then all the OS on Virtual Drives. Then all I have to do is make an image of the primary drive to restore basic WinXP. An then just copy VHD's for each OS - including WinXP 2005 MCE. Then I just have to recopy the VHD back should I not like the way the current version is performing, etc. To take it one step beyond. Lets say I have a nice version of WinXp MCE 2005, rename and copy the VHD and have a second version available to experiment with. Add programs, settings, etc. anyway, instead of worrying about uninstalling bad programs or restoring setting, I just go and rename, copy WinXP MCE again and start with a fresh slate? Right now I went with an ATI software upgrade that went south, would be nice to start over in a matter of minutes. Am I missing something? In fact, you can "trade" VHDs from one machine to another and they "work just fine. I have prepared VHD's of every OS that I leave handy and "burn them off to DVD-R to save them. It's a good way of having a known "good "Win2k SP4 install, etc. when I need it.
