ESX supports clustering VM's, so if a single ESX box goes down, the VM stays up and the host load gets transferred to another ESX server.

Also, if you had a bunch of ESX servers you can dynamically distribute VM's across the entire server farm.

The only hardware requirement to running ESX is a SCSI disk, and a dedicated management NIC.
