Before re-install or modifying your FF setup:
1. Make sure you have latest Java JRE & Flash updates.
2. consider creating a new profile for FF to test since FF stores AddOn's
per-user.
Adding " -profilemanager" (sans-quotes) to the FF shortcut displays the profile
manager rather than jumping in the browser. Create a "test" profile and launch FF
with it. Simply add back addons one at a time until you get a problem.

I am not aware of a switch to "turn off tabbed browsing" in FF other than simply
reusing the same tab. Running in a tab vs. new window should not affect performance
content but there could be other issues with HOW that site uses say Java or Flash,
combined multi-tab usage is causing high cpu utilization, or possibly an unfixed bug
(FF 3.01 is still new).
Certainly would piss me off enough not to use the site if I had to change my whole
browsing style just for them since I have EVERYTHING including pop-ups open in a new
tab. Look into TabMixPlus which gives you better control over over how sites affect
your browser window/tabs, also adds a "open this link in new window" function.
Good that you are learning to live with NoScript's added steps, it might just save
your ass someday! Consider AdBlock with a filter subscription to complete the process
of blocking unwanted content. You start to forget how ad driven sites are until
you're forced to browse without it!

Two questions: (I hate asking questions to answer one...)
Are you using the latest version and build of FF?
(Mine claims "itself" that 3.0.1 is the newest released version.)
Equal. I am using v3.0.1 also.
Did you try to disable your plug-ins/extensions?
No. What does this do? The plugins I have now came as part of the
initial install; and/or some bogus choices by yours truly!
They are: Adobe Acrobat, Java(tm) Platform SE 6 U7, Microsoft(r) DRM
(network object), Microsoft(r) DRM (store netscape object), Mozilla
Default plug-in, Shockwave Flash v9.0.r124, Windows MP Plug-in
(Npdplay.dll)
The only extension I use ATM is NoScript.
I run all sorts of tabs "all the time" in the same window,
and most are opened from inside that same window to
begin with...
Yes, well this is how I thought it would be also. Not yet.
When I have trouble (not often) with FF, the BEST thing is
it is easy to fix by a simple un+re-install... (Unlike IE...)
OK. I get this. But this portends a dual install on each of my clients
for some sort of stable install. Odd. Not yet; unless truly necessary.
This is my test-bed machine for pending migration of FF to my other LAN
clients. IF I did bogus during the initial install of FF and the one
extension, I'd really like to know where I went wrong; before I start
hacking on FF for personal comfort.
ATM, shutting "tabs" off fixes that issue; even though I suspect a
deeper trouble.
