Greg,
I completely get your 'value of time' point. I understand that you value your time differently than I value my time. OK. Is that fair? Yes, I agree. I live with another perspective. What I have is what I have. And, my income will not change. I am a retired person living on a fixed pension. More "hours" will not change the end of the month. Agreed, a new part-time or full-time job can fix this. Agreed, this is MY choice. My issue. I really do not wish to have a discussion about what you believe I should be doing. That would be way off-topic. I am simply asking technical questions that I am certainly still goofy about. Long ago, I gave up on "Guru Status."

So, here is a question: If I go get a 40-80GB new ATA100 hd, do you suppose this OLD PC just might live another "few" years?
Thanks,
Duncan

I dunno...I guess I kind of view it from a value of time perspective. I
value my time tremendously--even so-called "free" time at home. I'd rather
spend a few bucks than spend hours on hardware that old. I do spend time on
projects...including a new NAS/home-SAN box based on a stack of rotting
250GB drives I had and an out-of-use dual-core Athlon X2 4400+ based system.
But I'd never spend hours working on decade-old hardware. The difference is
that at the end, I have a very usable appliance that I can use to play with
current technologies. Even if you got that 440BX-based system operational,
at the end, it's still (IMO) too old and too slow to be used for anything.

At the same time though, I guess if you get a kick out of messing around
with that ancient stuff, more power to you. :)
