Unraid is basically a special version of slackware linux. I used to use Unraid and switched over to Synology at 2x the cost.
a. 1 disk failure tolerance for Unraid - I wanted 2 (which Synology offered with their hybrid raid setup) b. Unraid performance is great if you use a cache disk (SSD), same as Synology (without cache disk) c. When a disk fails, how do I know which one failed? (Unraid) ... I don't want to look at each of my drives and read the label. d. Wanted a lower power footprint so it can last longer on UPS. My 16-drive Unraid tower used a 600W PSU, my 13-drive Synology uses less than half that. It basically boiled down to the fact that I have less time and tolerance to deal with the little issues that come up on homegrown solutions that forced me to go with a much more expensive but polished product.
