Tim,
I will look at your link. But, if there is any $$$ involved I am not really interested.

BTW, I just tried your suggestion to update the product key from the System
page. This FAILED with the msg:
"This key can't be used to activate this edition of Windows. Please try another."
The key I used was packed with my new Windows 8.1 PRO sw. DOH!

Am I allowed to De-Activate a previous install of Windows 8.1 and still retain
ownership or re-activation of the 'old' 8.1 OS sw at a later date?
Otherwise, I will drop the 'old 8.1' OS DVD's in my shredder and just move on into the future. M$ truly has this 'activation' business truly locked down. I don't
mind. I just to get to where I choose to be.

As I wrote, I don't have trouble doing a format of the SSD again and starting all over.
I sorta expected this hoop-jumping anyway............................. :)

Duncan,

Give this a try:

You can upgrade on the fly. It's like Windows 7's Anytime Upgrade.

Tim,
OK, but I'll wait for other impressions. Ultimately, I figure I can
just format the SSD and start from scratch. No real data to worry about
atm!

Hello Duncan,

I think you can change the product key and it should work. Not sure
though.

Tim,
Thank you for the share! Yes, I have seen this view. OK. Now, I get
my confusion. I have loaded/activated plain old Win8.1-64bit.
The large blue font in the upper-right must refer to the 'Windows 8'
series (Win8.0-Win 8.9). At least that is how I read this.
Two days ago the postman delivered my replacement OS box.
It is labeled Windows 8.1 PRO (full version).

So, now the question is: Can I use the 64-bit DVD to 'upgrade' to
Win8.1 PRO, or, should I just hope that the DVD asks to format the
SSD
(C:\) and just start over again fresh. I will only loose my FF
browser and my Eset AV install (fully backed up to NAS!
Thanks again,
Duncan
