OK,
So I just got off the phone with my older Brother. He owns the Gigiagyte
GA-M51GM-S2G m/b.
We found out his BIOS is 'F4.' 12 versions below the latest 'F16beta.'
OK his m/b is truly
questionable to support, even marginally, any SSD! I get it. He chooses
to push on. Fine.
We had a shouting match about WHO should phone Gigabyte about
'whatever.' He lost.
His position is "ain't gonna change no m/b just to run W7/W8.1. I just
said fine.
I now wait what he gets back from Gigabyte............................ :)
Thanks Collective,

FORC5/Anthony,
Yes, I agree also. I have 4 boxes of new hdw I bought last year to
upgrade to Win7/8.1;
just because I suspected my current C2D PCs might be too long of
tooth. Fine. That
was my logic based on logic and wisdom of the Collective. I have tried
to get my Brother
to join our party, but, he has not. I just do not know why. He is very
well educated, but, he
can be extremely dense; specially about his PC! He would rather quote
gospel he reads in
"PC Magazine."
Thank you. I will put together an alternate
plan............................ :)

your brother needs to get new HW. IMO
I would not recommend any of what he wants to do on that old system.
I have friends in the same boat. They do not listen to me either
except they do call me in for 911 :{)
That said I have put SSD's in older XP laptops and they seem to
perform just fine. Not supposed to be kosher
I do not think 2gb of ram is enough for w7 and beyond. IMO

Am I biting off more than I can chew???????
So my older Brother runs XP, but wants to upgrade to Win8.1PRO-64bit.
OK, fine. He says both W7 and W8.1 MS tester apps tell him he is
good to
upgrade.
His PC uses a Gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2G m/b, anAMD Athlon64
cpu, and 2GB of ram. I do not know what level his bios is currently at.
No, I do not know how old this PC is, but could be maybe 8-10yrs
old. I have 'talked'
him through disabling his nVidia 6100 on-board chip and installing a
modern video
card. I have 'talked him through upgrading his internal cooling
fans. Clearly, he is
NOT a PC Internals kind of person. He is an application wonk.
So now he tells me he bought, and, wishes to install a Crucial MX100
128GB SSD!
I now do not have a good feeling that his m/b logic can support an
SSD; EXCEPT
VIA 'IDE.' There is no mention about 'AHCI.'
OK. so I go read the SATA-II connections. All the text in this
section is focused at, and,
speaking about RAID! Clearly not on my list of set-up options.
................... :)
Or, I could choose RAID0 (mirror), use one SSD, and let it go
'non-redundant!
I do not feel crazy yet, but the more I read, the more I start
leaning toward, "You really
can NOT do the!
Opinions, suggestions, experiences are gratefully appreciated.
