GTX 680, specs to 4096x2160.
must be the cable but so far am just fine with the HDMI. Need to
investigate a better quality cable in display port.
video on the display port booting up was all goofy too, not so with the HDMI.
any one recommend a quality display port cable ?

It is more likely your video card display port can't support higher
resolutions or maybe your display port cable is bad.

HDMI does not support the resolutions that Display port supports. If
it did there would be no need for display port. Check your video
card specs to see what ports support what resolutions.
also why would my monitor have TWO HDMI inputs ?
Same reason your TV does... PC, Xbox, BlueRay, what ever
