Julian aka Sabre?
I just started to look at development boards and it's amazing the kind
of power you can get for just a few bucks. There are also free
compilers, from the manufacturer and freeware.
My wife is having someone build a lighthouse for the front lawn and want
me to light it. I have planned to use a lead-acid battery, charged by
solar cells and an LED lamp mounted on a stepping motor for rotation and
the whole think PIC controlled (or maybe ARM) to turn on at dusk and off
at dawn. Considering sound effects, but that's probably optional....

Been meaning to tell you that I passed this along to a couple of
friends who just started playing with Arduino's. Personally, I like
Propeller MC's :)

Design News and Digikey have teamed up to give free online webinars. Currently
they are presenting the Microcontroller Basics course. The lectures are live
at 2pm EST. Lecture lasts 45 minutes with 15 minutes for questions via the
forum. The first lecture was Monday, the archived link is here:
http://www.designnews.com/lecture.asp?doc_id=236285
and the 2nd is here:
http://www.designnews.com/lecture.asp?doc_id=236286
You'll probably have to register with Design News to access this. So far the
information is not that deep and intensive, and the material is oriented toward
system designers. Scattered within each lecture are suggestions on good books
on various subjects and links to supporting websites.
This course is M-F, then a week off and then the 'Advanced' course. Once on
the site, you can see all the info on what's being offered.
