Thane,
Thank you so much for the reply.
Too bad I am beyond your suggestions. No harm, no foul.
I have a 'new' machine. Yet, it does not know who/what it is.
It is like Win2K. It sorta runs, but not completely...............
Sadly, I did not use the "bootcfg /rebuild" command properly.
Let's call this one both age and in-experience! LOL.
Anyway, I am still playing with this machine. XP just refuses
to just croak! I'm still looking/tweaking.
Thank you. I so appreciate the share.

Can I copy a different boot.ini file into/over what appears to be a bad/dorked boot.ini file
and get away clean? The OS is WinXPpro SP3.

Yes. Or you could use bootcfg /rebuild from the recovery console.

Bottom Choice: <hy-lited> Windows (default)
This choice boots to another Black Screen: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file."

Hmmm. Sounds like rebuilding the boot.ini will fix that.
