The real problem is that if that company also markets an implementation of the standard, there will always be forces within the company which view all other implementations as competitors.

It *is* one of the interesting things about the Java ecosystem - we are all able to all work together in creating the specifications via the JCP process, and then compete on implementation.

It seems to have worked pretty well so far.
