One of the issues in deciding where to hold a Convention is finding a
city with enough AJL members who are willing to volunteer to put it
together. So far, we seem to find these volunteers around the larger
cities which tend to have more expensive accommodations. Another
consideration is Kashrut. Seemingly the hotels that have kosher kitchens
charge more. And as Joel pointed out, the cost of having our Convention
on a college campus (as evidenced by the cost of CAJE) is not less
expensive. However,  I do like Aviva's idea of varying the convention
every few years. That might satisfy most at least some of the time!
