The American Jewish Historical Society, founded in 1892, seeks a 
full-time Reference/Cataloging Librarian for its New York City 
headquarters at the Center for Jewish History. The American Jewish 
Historical Society is the oldest national ethnic historical 
organization in the United States. The Society's library, archives, 
photograph, and art and artifacts collections document the American 
Jewish experience.

QUALIFICATIONS: An MLS from an accredited library school, along with 
a minimum of one year reference experience, is required for this 
position. Advanced graduate level coursework in reference 
preferred.  Experience using Exlibris' Aleph system or another 
automated library system is highly desirable, as is a working 
knowledge of RLIN21, AACR2, and Library of Congress classification. 
Knowledge of American Jewish history preferred. This position 
requires the ability to work independently, as well as work well with 
a team. Candidate should have excellent communication skills.

DUTIES: Conduct reference services 2-3 days per week at the reference 
desk of our shared reading room with the partners of the Center for 
Jewish History, assisting researchers with use of our archival and 
library collections. Be responsible for responding to reference 
queries submitted via email, phone, and conventional mail. Perform 
copy and original cataloging of printed materials. Work as a team 
with Society archivists on acquisitions, collection development, 
database development and implementation of preservation projects. 
Maintain periodicals collection. Represent the Society on Center for 
Jewish History committees through which policy for public services, 
automation, and public programs are developed. Participate in the 
research and implementation of exhibits and special projects.
