Jewish Literature for Children Western Regional Conference Sunday, February 17, 2008 10 AM 4 PM Sinai Temple 10400 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA The Association of Jewish Libraries, Association of Jewish Libraries of Southern California, and Sinai Temple Blumenthal Library in cooperation with the Bureau of Jewish Education will hold the West Coast Regional Conference on Jewish Literature for Children on Sunday, February 17, 2008, at Sinai Temple, 10400 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles, where authors, illustrators and publishers will present sessions on the latest offerings in Jewish literature for children and young adults. The one-day event is open to administrators, teachers, librarians, authors, booksellers, would-be authors, and adults who have a passion for Jewish children's literature. The $60 registration for the conference includes all sessions and handouts, a kosher lunch, an autograph dessert party, and a silent auction of artwork from Jewish picture books. The conference will feature a panel on illustration in Jewish literature, moderated by Lois Sarkissian, owner of Every Picture Tells a Story in Santa Monica. Ms. Sarkissian will present an overview of the history of illustration in Jewish books. On the panel will be Amalia Hoffman (Purim Goodies and Friday Night with the Pope), Steve Sheinkin (Adventures of Rabbi Harvey), Marissa Moss (Hannah's Journal and Amelia's Notebook), and Elisa Kleven (Paper Princess and The Apple Doll). In addition, the conference will hold small group workshops where participants will make an art project in the style of the featured illustrators. Appearing at the autograph party will be many local authors and illustrators. Books by all the authors and illustrators participating will be available for sale at our Jewish Literature for Children marketplace. Individual manuscript consultations will be available for an additional fee of $45. Up to 10 pages may be submitted by January 30. A 0.5 unit of Continuing Education is available for this conference from the Bureau of Jewish Education in Los Angeles.
