Three off the top of my head, which have been excellent stimuli to discussion are: The Brothers Ashkenazi, by Israel Joshua Singer (not Isaac Bashevis); A Tale of Love and Darkness by Amos Oz (a memoir); and Daniel Deronda, by George Eliot. If you can get it, The Island Within, by Ludwig Lewisohn, made a great stir in its day, as the study of assimilation changing to Jewish self-realization. It would make a provocative follow-up to Daniel Deronda, a much more complex work.
