The book includes descriptions of area Jewish families and congregations and the roles they played in this pivotal moment in American history. Readers will learn about Jewish figures like Eugenia Phillips Levy, a congressman's wife who was put under house arrest for spying for the South, and Charles Liebermann, a Jewish physician who was one of the doctors called to President Abraham Lincoln's bedside after Lincoln was shot. The exhibition, Jewish Life in Mr. Lincoln's City, was mounted as part of national celebrations of Lincoln's bicentennial in 2009. It was designated an official program of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and Cultural Tourism DC's program, Living the Legacy: Lincoln in Washington, DC. The exhibition opened at Washington Hebrew Congregation and is now on display at Beth El Hebrew Congregation in Alexandria. Both of these local congregations have been in existence since the time of the Civil War. For more information about the book, visit http://www.jhsgw.org/books/civilwar.php.
