Jewish Life in Mr. Lincoln's City, a new 171-page hardcover book tells
stories of Jewish life in Civil-War Washington and across the river in
Alexandria. It includes text and historic images from the original
exhibition of the same name and essays by experts on Abraham Lincoln,
the Civil War, and American Jewish history-all introduced by leading
historian Dr. Jonathan Sarna. Other contributors include:
- Harold Holzer -- "Lincoln and the Jews"
- Dr. Pam Nadell - "'Giving our all to the poor soldiers:' Jewish Women
in the Civil War"
- Dr. John Y. Simon -- "Ulysses S. Grant and the Jews: An Unsolved
Mystery"
- Dr. Melvin I. Urofsky -- "Virginian Jews in the Civil War"

One of the most important events in our nation's history, the Civil War
forever altered American life. Washington and Alexandria were sites of
intense activity. The book includes descriptions of area Jewish families
and congregations and the roles they played in this pivotal moment in
American history. Readers will learn about Jewish figures like Eugenia
Phillips Levy, a congressman's wife who was put under house arrest for
spying for the South, and Charles Liebermann, a Jewish physician who was
one of the doctors called to President Abraham Lincoln's bedside after
Lincoln was shot.

The exhibition, Jewish Life in Mr. Lincoln's City, was mounted as part
of national celebrations of Lincoln's bicentennial in 2009. It was
designated an official program of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial
Commission and Cultural Tourism DC's program, Living the Legacy: Lincoln
in Washington, DC. The exhibition opened at Washington Hebrew
Congregation and is now on display at Beth El Hebrew Congregation in
Alexandria. Both of these local congregations have been in existence
since the time of the Civil War.

For more information about the book, visit
http://www.jhsgw.org/books/civilwar.php. The book retails for $15 and
is available from the Society as well as several D.C.-area bookstores
and Amazon.com. Wholesale discounts for purchases of 10 or more books
are available. Contact the Jewish Historical Society (information
above) for more information or to make a purchase.

The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington and its Lillian &
Albert Small Jewish Museum preserve, chronicle and present the story of
the local Jewish community through archival collections, exhibitions,
educational programs, publications and the restoration and preservation
of the oldest synagogue building in the nation's capital.
