The New York Metropolitan Area Chapter of the Association of Jewish
Libraries (AJL-NYMA) will hold its Spring 2011 Conference on Tuesday
morning, May 17th, 9 am-1 pm, at Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion, 1 West 4th Street, New York City. The theme of
the conference is "From Generation to Generation: Jewish Genealogy in 2011."

PROGRAM:

9:00 am – Registration/Networking/Light refreshments

9:30 am – Opening remarks – Roz Friedman, President, AJL-NYMA

9:40 am – Making Connections: Introduction to Jewish Genealogy –
Robert Friedman, Professional Genealogist

Mr. Friedman will cover basic methods and resources for Jewish family
history research. Beginning with oral history and "family archives"
of photographs and documents, genealogists use sources like the US
census, immigration and naturalization papers, vital records,
cemetery and funeral home records, newspapers, city directories, and
telephone books. These materials may be in the form of handwritten
documents, printed books, microforms, or databases and images on the
Internet. Methods for recording and displaying genealogical data
include printed forms and computer software. The origins of Jewish
names and how to deal with spelling variations are also important
topics. The presentation will be illustrated with many examples, and
handouts listing key resources will be provided.

11:00 am – Family History in the Digital Age - David Kleiman,
Curator, Loeb Visitors Center of Touro Synagogue and President of
Heritage Muse, Inc.

Mr. Kleiman will provide an independent overview of software tools,
digital resources and research (online and CD) and mobile
technologies in family history research, looking specifically at
trends in digital resources and software tools and methodologies for
assisting and directing library patrons.

*Following the formal program, AJL-NYMA invites the entire community
to a reception in honor of retiring librarians Aviva Astrinsky, YIVO
Institute of Jewish Research, and Philip Miller, HUC-JIR. Please join
us as we celebrate the careers and contributions to Judaica
librarianship of these two outstanding individuals.
